Back in 1979 an elder Native American Medicine Man called me The Teacher of the Stories of Life. At the time it seemed too ponderous, but now, thirty years later it seems more appropriate.
I have been teaching children and adults all my life. After eleven years teaching Philosophy at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California, I resigned my professorship so that my spouse, Athena, (an accomplished mother, Montessori method teacher, and psychologist) and I could educate our children the way we wanted. Together we directed and taught a small group of students K-12 at the Melville Montessori School in Willits, CA for 16 years. We educated our four boys as well as other children in the community. We founded a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation together, the Hermeneutic Institute for Wholistic Health and Education, based on a dream. Divorcing after thirty years of marriage brought great changes and the need for deeper understanding of the psyche’s processes.
While facilitating an after-school-tutoring program and creating a Charter School for Native Americans, and engaged in dialogue with my personal therapist, I realized my interest in acquiring more counseling skills. With the help and permission of the Tribal Council, I earned a Masters degree from Pacifica Graduate Institute. My thesis (in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis on Depth Psychology) is published on this site. It argues that the Peyote Ceremony of the Native American Church functions as a gateway to healing and transformation. My students tell me it is “a good read”.
The Stories of Life are about how humans interact with the Spirit Realm and one another. Acquiring a great deal of knowledge about mythology (the basic patterns of psyche) enables one to see these patterns crystalize in people’s lives. With Creator’s gift of psychic abilities and years of observing human behavior, the ancestors begin to help us through our dreams and medicine ceremonies. At least that has been my experience. Some people have mysterious dreams which puzzle them and need attention. Dreams tell us exactly what our psychic situation is. They speak in symbols and metaphors. The art of interpretation, coupled with wisdom regarding human history and relationships, makes being a teacher and mentor into a sort of wizard. That is how the eagles told me it goes and why I have this curious name of White Eagle. It represents the Spirit Eagle, who, like the Greek god Hermes, brings messages from the Spirit world. And like the Heavenly Father’s familiar animal, the eagle brings our destiny to us. By interpreting dreams and teaching this skill to others, I am sharing what I have learned. My school, Hermiades Peripatein, is based on Aristotle’s method of walking and talking about what is “in the field” of the psyche, or what Carl Jung called the psychoid, the merging of the spiritual and the material realms in synchronous phenomena.
Honesty, authenticity, vulnerability, transparency in loving relationships encourage creativity and growth of the soul. Improving our communication skills, especially our use of feeling language, can lead to healing estranged relationships with friends and loved ones. I help people develop these skills and support their process. Dreams give us the diagnosis and indicate each individual’s path to healing and wholeness.

Michael,
I have just discovered your site and now have it in my Favorites list. As many others in this day, I have little time to dedicate for this type of reading so I didn’t venture too deep. From what I have read, I think this is exactly what I am looking for. How do I contact other Green Men to share stories?
Regards,
Thanks Tomas for your comment. We need to set up a format for sharing stories. I will get to work on that and get back to you. Hope you get to see Avatar in 3D and Invictus, they are inspiring stories. Blessings, Michael
: Love the images and layout of this Blogsite!
Looking forward to your new website!!!

Mike,
I want to make a quick note here to let you know I just enjoyed a couple hours catching up on your stories, wisdom and “human all too human” wonderland of words.
I am thankful to you for putting your soul into these pages. I am really digging it.
How did I get here tonight? My daughter informed me earlier this evening that, “Dad you know Michael Melville? He is really a trip”
I immediately sensed that all in the world is in balance tonight.
Carl
Dude . .
Blast from the past. It’s amazing what the internet can dredge up. We last spoke I was in Alaska, what 35 years ago?
Do you still have that monk’s outfit?
My son and I are travelling the west coast (Bellingham to LA) in July this year.
Thought we might stop in, have a bite, rehash old times?
Mike.
Mike, I would love to see you and your son. I am in Ojai, Ca. We have a lot to talk about indeed! Love and blessings, Michael
